Of Ian’s book, ‘Rum: a Social and Sociable History of the Real Spirit of 1776’, Kirkus Reviews writes “rambunctious, rollicking history, sodden with tasty lore”. The Washington Post furthers, “If only high school textbooks were written in the style of (this book), lessons of the 10 th grade would be more fun and memorable. One curious legend Williams relates concerns the body of Admiral Horatio Nelson, Britain’s greatest naval hero, which reportedly was shipped back home preserved in a cask of rum. Williams slyly notes that, according to one version of the legend, the cask arrived a few liters shy”.

Polished Palate
International Rum Festival Tasting Competition
The Polished Palate Rum Tasting Competition is the first and only such recognized competition solely for cane-based spirits in the United States. The first Polished Palate competition took place in Ybor City in 2006 with 55 brands judged. In 2007, 80 brands were judged. The 2008 competition realized 150 entries—the largest rum competition to-date in the United States.
